The Cost of a Kitchen Remodel in 2023
April 12th, 2023 | 4 min read
Your kitchen is one the most frequented places in your home, next to your bathroom, and most of the time a kitchen remodel gets put on the back burner. While kitchen remodels often get forgotten about, they are one of the most satisfying remodels in a home. A new kitchen design not only brightens up the home, but it also increases the home’s value.
The average kitchen remodel in 2023 is between $25,000 and $35,000. Of course, kitchen remodels can exceed this amount, but the cost of your kitchen remodel is all dependent on what exactly you want in your kitchen space. Here are some kitchen remodeling costs by kitchen type:
- Minor remodel: $9,000 – $12,000
- Small to Mid-Scale Remodel: $14,000 – $20,000
- Upper Range to Major Remodel: $22,000 – $45,000+
What You Get for Different Remodel Price Ranges:
Minor Remodel:
For minor kitchen remodels some items in your kitchen may stay, like your cabinets, and others may get upgraded. You might get a fresh coat of paint to brighten up the space or upgrade your fixtures like the faucet or cabinet and drawer handles. For many minor kitchen remodels, the upgrades that you make can be completed yourself, but it all depends on your level of comfort.
Small to Mid-Scale Remodel:
Small to Mid-Scale remodels are a little more intense than a minor remodel. In this remodel range, you may look at layout changes or additions, like an island. New cabinetry may be purchased in this price range along with new, upgraded countertops and backsplash. In this price range, new appliances may be a cost option, especially if you have been wanting matching appliances.
Upper Range to Major Remodel:
Upper range and major remodels are where complete kitchen remodels happen. This price range normally includes all new custom cabinetry, high end countertops, like marble or granite, new backsplash, new flooring, new appliances, and fixtures, like faucets or even lighting. In this prices range, you can really expand your kitchen space, like removing the wall between your kitchen and living room.
New flooring costs on average:
-
Ceramic tile: $2 – $4 per square foot
-
Hardwood: $3 – $10 per square foot
-
Sheet Vinyl: $0.50 – $2 per square foot
-
Vinyl plank flooring: $2.50 – $5 per square foot
There’s no doubt that these cost ranges are large, especially the average cost range. Many factors are involved when it comes to cost so here is a breakdown of those cost factors.
Factors that impact cost:
The size of your kitchen is one of the biggest factors in the cost of a kitchen remodel. To put it simply, the bigger the kitchen the bigger the cost, but why is that? Larger kitchens normally have more cabinets, longer countertops, more hardware fixtures, etcetera. More cabinets mean more materials used and labor to construct and install them. Smaller kitchens are comparatively less expensive because less material and labor is involved.
Another cost factor involved is whether you are getting brand new cabinets, or a cabinet reface. Getting brand new cabinets installed is exactly how it sounds. Old cabinets come out, new cabinets, doors and drawers go in. A reface on the other hand is a different process that uses your existing cabinets. The cabinet refacing process utilizes your original base cabinets with a quarter inch facing of the new cabinets that you choose. With the refacing process, you also receive brand new doors and drawers in the style and color that you chose as well.
Kitchen Cabinet Costs:
-
Stock Cabinets – $100 – $300 per foot
-
Semi-Custom Cabinets (Refacing) – $300 – $500 per foot
-
Custom Cabinets – $500+ per foot
Along with installing either new cabinets or refacing, there is a cost difference between cabinet door styles, color, or stain of the cabinets. The labor involved in making these cabinets affects the overall cost of the cabinets. Painted cabinets compared to stained cabinets cost more because paint made specifically for cabinet application is more expensive.
One of the bigger cost factors is if you are upgrading your countertops and what countertop material you are using. Laminate countertops are cheaper in cost but have a shorter life span compared to granite or quartz. Granite and quartz are higher end countertops that provide a longer life span but are more expensive.
What We Do:
Here at JSB Home Solutions, our kitchen remodeling process is a little different than larger chain companies. We believe in our SMART system to
guarantee you are not without a useable kitchen for more than a day. What does that mean exactly?
Our process starts at the initial project consultation where our team helps you design your space right inside of
your home. During this process our project consultants will take initial measurements of your space so we can give you a to the dollar amount quote. After that initial consultation, your materials are ordered, and we do not start your remodeling project until all those materials are in our possession. This allows us to not only double check that all your project materials were ordered correctly, but it also solidifies that your kitchen remodel will take about a week and a half to complete.
On the first day of your scheduled remodel, our team, based on what your project entails, removes everything that you are replacing. This first day is the only day your kitchen space is not fully useable. We make sure throughout the entire process that you have running water, a stove hookup and a refrigerator hookup. No one likes spoiled milk, so we do not disconnect anything unless you tell us to. Our SMART process has been fine tuned to near perfection so our homeowners are satisfied from day one. This process allows us to be in and out of your home within two weeks because we specialize in installation of nearly everything in your kitchen except your floors and countertops.
Is a Kitchen Remodel Worth It?
In short terms, yes. A kitchen remodel not only is a great investment, but it also increases your home’s value. A kitchen is the most frequented space in your home and remodeling it will ensure years of enjoyment and memories. While at first, it may seem like a huge dollar amount to put into a singular space, the functionality and usability of the space will greatly increase as well.
With today’s ever-changing housing market, it may seem harder to measure an increase in home value after a kitchen remodel. Studies have shown that home buyers are more inclined to make an offer on a home with an updated kitchen and updated bathrooms. A kitchen remodel alone has shown on average a 64% increase in the return on investment. This means that for every dollar you spend on your kitchen remodel, you get 64% of that back.
If you are looking to remodel your kitchen space to sell your home, choose a more neutral remodel that appeases the general buying market. Before starting this process, weigh out the pros and cons to see if this is the right fit for your home and family. Lay out your overall budget and decide if you need to take a loan out to complete the project. Decide whether to hire a general contractor and make sure to check the credibility of the general contractor you may use. Overall, go into a kitchen remodel knowing everything that you want done in your kitchen space so you can have the kitchen that you deserve. Reach out to JSB Home Solutions today to learn more.
