How to Remove Cabinet Shelf Clips
February 19th, 2024 | 3 min read
One of the primary advantages of cabinets is that they are adjustable. The cabinets contain removable shelf clamps that can be easily removed to adjust shelf height. Removing them involves unhooking the fastener(or pushing and pulling it out), which may require some force.
Most of our kitchen cabinet shelves have inexpensive and easy-to-use shelf clips, and we guarantee they will keep your shelf in place. However, if you ever need help removing them, contact us at JSB Home Solutions for immediate assistance.
WHAT IS A CABINET SHELF CLIP?
A cabinet shelf clip is a plastic peg that fits into a pre-drilled slot within a shelf. Typically, each shelf needs four pins to keep it firmly in place.
A cabinet shelf clip may sometimes come with a locking mechanism that keeps the shelf securely in place and prevents it from sliding up.
HOW CABINET SHELF CLIP REMOVAL WORKS
Most commonly used non-locking cabinet shelf pins are suitable for holding items. Their main drawback is that they don’t hold the shelf in place, which means that if one pin goes missing, the items on the other side will be unstable whenever you want to get something from the opposite side of the shelf. In the worst-case scenario, poorly placed shelf pins may cause a shelf to tip over.
A cabinet shelf clip holds a shelf in place using hinges that lock into position when pressed down. When you release them, they spring open. If your cabinet has concealed hinges, you can easily remove and replace your cabinet doors.
What Supplies You’ll Need
To remove broken shelf clips successfully, you will need the following tools;
- Flat scrap piece of wood or cardboard
- Cordless drill
- 1/16-inch drill bit
- Needle-nose pliers
- #4 or #5 size screw
- Claw hammer or pry bar
TIPS FOR REMOVING THE SHELF CLIP
How to Remove a Cabinet Shelf Clip by Taking off the Doors
As long as your cabinet has concealed hinges, the doors can easily be removed and replaced without losing the door’s pre-set swing adjustment. Removing the doors will help you adjust your shelf clips. If you’re unsure how to remove plastic shelf clippers, here’s how to remove the cabinet shelf by removing the doors:
- Hold one of the cabinet doors tightly in place with one arm.
- Release the hinge
- Using both hands, slide the shelf towards you, ensuring it is at a perfect level as you slide it out.
- Remove the cabinet shelf clips by carefully twisting them to loosen the pegs from the holes.
How to Remove a Broken Cabinet Shelf Clip
When the peg on your cabinet shelf clip breaks off, leave the peg in place. If a pin has snapped off and you cannot remove it from its hole using your bare hands, you will need to drive a small nail into the peg and then use needle-nose pliers to pull out the peg. If that doesn’t work, drill into the hole and insert a small screw to hold the peg.
How to Know It’s Time for New Cabinets – Signs to Watch For
If you notice any of the following issues with your existing cabinets, you may want to consider replacing them:
- Dents and scratches
- Your cabinets always look dirty no matter how much you clean them
- Cabinet’s doors are not opening and closing correctly
You might need a replacement if you recognize these warning signs when looking at your existing kitchen cabinets. You’ll be glad you changed them.
